Old VHS and Mini DV Tapes in Geelong – A Story About Rediscovering Family Memories
May 22, 2026A Geelong family recently brought in a small box of old VHS tapes they had found while cleaning out their garage. The tapes were dusty, some were labelled, and some had nothing written on them at all. They told us they hadn’t watched them in over 20 years because their VHS player had stopped working a long time ago.
After the tapes were converted to digital, they sat down together to watch the videos for the first time in decades.
The first video showed a Christmas morning from the late 1990s. The kids were running into the living room in their pyjamas, excited to open presents. In the background, you could hear family members talking and laughing. The parents watching the video now couldn’t believe how young everyone looked, and how different the house looked back then.
Another tape showed a birthday party in the backyard, with a homemade cake and party games on the lawn. There was also footage of grandparents who were no longer around, smiling and talking to the camera. Seeing those moments again meant more than they expected.
By the time they finished watching the videos, the whole family was laughing, pointing at the screen, and talking about memories they hadn’t thought about in years.
This is something we see often with families in Geelong. Many homes still have VHS and Mini DV tapes stored away in cupboards or boxes, filled with weddings, birthdays, school concerts, holidays, and everyday family life. At the time, these moments seemed normal, but years later they become incredibly important.
The problem is that VHS and Mini DV tapes don’t last forever. Magnetic tapes slowly deteriorate over time, and the players needed to watch them are becoming harder to find. This means many families have memories stored on tapes that they currently cannot watch.
Converting old tapes to digital format allows these memories to be preserved and enjoyed again. Once digitised, videos can be watched on modern TVs, computers, tablets, and phones, and shared with family members so everyone can have a copy.
Old home videos are more than just recordings. They are pieces of family history — voices, faces, homes, and moments captured in time.
For many families, converting old tapes isn’t just about technology. It’s about seeing those moments again, hearing familiar voices, and remembering times that might otherwise have been forgotten.
Sometimes a small box of old tapes can bring back a lifetime of memories. We at The Tribe look forward to helping you preserve your memories.
