A Box of Memories from Geelong

At The Tribe Video in Geelong, we often say that old VHS tapes are a little bit magical.

On the outside, they might look worn out, dusty, faded, or forgotten at the bottom of a cupboard. But inside? Inside are birthdays, weddings, family holidays, Christmas lunches, school concerts, first steps, and moments people thought they might never see again.

Every week, someone walks through our doors in Geelong carrying a cardboard box full of tapes. Usually, they smile nervously and say something like, “I’m not even sure what’s on these anymore.”

And honestly, that’s our favourite part.

Recently, a local Geelong family brought us a collection of VHS tapes that had been sitting in their garage for nearly twenty-five years. The tapes had moved house three different times. They survived hot summers, cold winters, and plenty of dust. The family almost threw them away during a clean-up before deciding to give them one last chance.

When we converted the tapes to digital, something special happened.

The very first recording showed a toddler running barefoot through a backyard sprinkler in the late 1990s. Then came family camping trips near the coast, birthday cakes with far too many candles, and grandparents laughing around a kitchen table.

The family told us later that one of the people in the footage had since passed away. They hadn’t heard his voice in years.

That’s the thing about VHS conversion. It’s never really about technology. It’s about people.
