Forgotten Tapes and Beautiful Memories in Colac
June 19, 2026There’s something about old VHS tapes that feels deeply personal.
Maybe it’s the handwritten labels.
Maybe it’s the faded plastic covers.
Or maybe it’s knowing that inside those tapes are moments that can never truly be recreated.
At The Tribe Video, we’ve had the privilege of helping families all across regional Victoria preserve their memories — including many wonderful people from Colac.
One story that stayed with us came from a family who discovered a dusty storage tub while cleaning out a relative’s home.
Inside were more than thirty VHS tapes.
Most simply said things like “Christmas 1998,” “Camping,” or “Kids.” Some didn’t have labels at all. Nobody had watched them in years because they no longer owned a VHS player.
The family brought the tapes to us hoping we could recover whatever was still there.
As we converted the footage into digital files, decades of memories slowly came back to life.
There were scenes from school sports days, beach holidays, birthday parties, and old family pets running around the backyard. One tape even contained footage from a wedding reception where relatives who are no longer with us were laughing, dancing, and telling jokes to the camera.
The family later told us the conversion became an event in itself.
They gathered together one weekend with snacks and cups of tea and watched hours of footage on the television. The younger generation saw their parents as teenagers. Grandchildren met relatives they had only ever heard stories about.
Everyone laughed at the hairstyles.
Everyone commented on the old cars.
And every now and then, the room went quiet as somebody recognised a familiar voice they hadn’t heard in a very long time.
Moments like that remind us why we love what we do.
At The Tribe, we’ve worked in video production for many years, but VHS conversion has a very different feeling to commercial work. It’s slower. More emotional. More human.
We’re not just transferring footage from one format to another.
We’re helping preserve family history.
Old tapes naturally degrade over time, and unfortunately many people don’t realise that VHS recordings can slowly fade away if left too long. That’s why we encourage families across Geelong, Colac, Warrnambool, Cobden, and surrounding areas to digitise their tapes while they still can.
The good news is that once converted, those memories become easy to store, share, and enjoy again.
One of the nicest things we hear from customers is how the footage sparks conversation.
People remember stories they hadn’t thought about in years.
Kids ask questions about their parents’ childhoods.
Families reconnect through shared memories.
That’s incredibly rewarding for a small local business like ours.
We’ve always believed video should feel real. Whether we’re producing professional content or converting home movies, our approach stays the same: treat every story with care and respect.
Because every tape matters to somebody.
The funny thing is, many people apologise when they hand us their tapes.
“These are probably boring,” they say.
But they’re never boring.
Real life is never boring.
A toddler dancing in the lounge room.
A backyard cricket match.
Grandparents sitting at the kitchen table.
Friends laughing at a barbecue.
Those are the moments people treasure most years later.
At The Tribe, we’re humbled every time someone trusts us with those memories. We know these tapes are irreplaceable, and we handle them carefully from the moment they arrive at our studio.
And honestly, seeing families reconnect with their history never gets old.
Not even close.
